Risk threshold
Sophie: It’s really sweet how that dog is eagerly waiting to bolt.
Fred: Lucky for him he can’t read the sign!
Helen: What does it say?
Fred: No dogs, no swimming, and no cycling! Basically: no fun allowed.
Kate: Oh man, how frustrating is that?!
Conrad: Depends on whether the girl will really observe the rules. You’d probably behave, wouldn’t you, Kate?
Kate: I daresay I would follow the many footprints in the sand.
Conrad: The little girl looks more adventurous than you. She’s weighing it up: first, no adults in sight; second, that decrepit sign has probably expired …
Helen: Third, breaking rules a little makes it even more fun. I bet she will have a go. If the dog bolts now, she’ll get carried away, anyhow.
Sophie: Then again, her hesitating shows she’s responsible, in no case diving into danger without thinking. However, she also needs these little opportunities of exploring on her own to build some self-confidence.
Fred: I think she can assess the risks.
Kate: Our kids have learned pretty well when it’s worth pushing the envelope a bit.
Robert: Indeed, but only after endless discussions of “red, yellow, or green” rules!
Conrad: Well, at any rate you can rely on them.
Robert: We have to. No idea what they’re up to right now.
